River's Edge Writers Retreat

As scheduled, Jude and I spent a wonderful evening with a group of writers at the River's Edge Writer's Retreat.  I held a discussion concerning the writing of creative nonfiction, then segued into publishing.  Jude talked about dust jacket and cover design.  What better place to have such an inspiring evening, than on the banks of the Henry's Fork of the Snake River.  Thank you Lyn, Janie and Kenya!

Shults Family Reunion

It is with great regret that we have decided to cancel our trip to the Medford, OR Shults family reunion.  Our involvement in the Emporium of the Arts during the Ashton Centennial Celebration is taking too much of our time.  Then, there is of course, the upcoming publication of Sunny's book, Sing or Cry on August 16.

Best of luck to all of our family and friends at the reunion.  We will miss you!!

Sunny Bingo, a.k.a. Ned Fairchild

Sunny Bingo's book Sing or Cry: My Life in Verse, is progressing nicely.  We have set a very tenative pub date as August 16; Sunny's birthday.  Meanwhile she will make appearances at the Emporium of the Arts, July 1-11 during the Ashton Centennial Celebration where she will perform.

Anyone with fine art, books or music to display and sell is invited to contact us at aspendpub@fretel.com .  There will be a commission of only 15% charged on items sold during this one time gala.   Don’t miss the big event!

Ashton's Centennial Celebration

We thought that Ashton should have some recognition for some of the finer things in life so Aspen'd Publishing is hosting an Emporium for the Arts.  The press release that went out yesterday is as follows:

Artists & writers invited to show their work at special Ashton Centennial ‘emporium’

ASHTON — The fine arts will be an intricate and exciting part of Ashton’s Centennial Celebration next month at The Emporium of the Arts, 516 Main Street across from City Drug.
Fine art, books and music will be featured at The Emporium, which will open its doors on Saturday, July 1. Hours will be 10 a.m. to “whenever” each day until the celebration ends on July 11.
Any local published author with books to sell is encouraged to participate. Musicians with CD's and tapes, or those who just want to perform in a jam session are also welcome. Dates and times of book signings and jam sessions will be announced at a later date. Set-up for books and items others than those to be hung is Friday, June 30.
Artists are encouraged to bring their fine art works for evaluation — paintings, photographs, glass blowing, sculptures, and pottery. No crafts please!  Paintings and photographs must be framed and ready to hang. Art will be juried when dropped-off from 10 a.m. to 4 p. m. Wednesday and Thursday, June 28 and 29, or by special arrangement.
Anyone wishing to participate is encouraged to contact Chan or Judith at Aspen'd Publishing as soon as possible because there is limited space.  Phone 652-3351 or e-mail aspendpub@fretel.com .

Fiftieth University of Idaho Class Reunion

One of the things that I managed to squeeze in at the beginning of the planting season was to attend my fiftieth graduation Class Reunion at the University of Idaho.  I'm a little late in talking about it, but now that the rush of spring planting is over (we planted 4000 acres of grain this year) I have regained control of my life and have time to catch up on my blogging.

When I signed up to go way back in February of this year, my wife and I were in the planning stages of setting up a writing contest for the best family history of the year.  The class reunion was the additional push I needed to fix a date and make the ten hour drive to Moscow, Idaho where I had spent seven of the best years of my life.  No, I wasn't a professional student.  After graduating with a B.S. degree, I came back eight years later for three more years and earned two more degrees; a master of science in agriculture and an MBA.  I won't bore you with the details of the reunion except to say we had a really good time and that the induction into the "Golden I Club" was the highlight of the planned activities.  Also, several of my classmates bought The Soul of the Land and We, The Shamans which was a pleasant surprise.

The real success of the trip took place when my wife and I met with one of the individuals that is currently a judge for the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Assn.  She expressed great interest in being one of our judges for Shaman Writer's Contest.  And, she also had some really good suggestions for inclusion in the contest rules and regulations.  We are still on track for publishing them by mid-summer.

Iconoclast Books - March 9, 2006

Chan and Judith have been invited to put on a workshop in Ketchum, Idaho March 9, 2006.  The topic will be "How to Write an Award Winning Family History," one that will be of interest to a much broader audience than just the immediate family.  The workshop will begin 7:00 p.m and will be held in the Iconoclast book store in Ketchum.

Malad, ID Feb. 1, 2006

The Oneida County Library has arranged for Chan and Judith to meet with a group of its readers to discuss The Soul of the Land.  The library recently purchased several of the books which has resulted in a lot of questions as to how the book was written.  We have learned there are a number of individuals in the community that are writing or thinking of writing their own family histories.  We, The Shamans will undoubtedly also be discussed during the meeting that is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. in the Library.
