"Why," I've been asked, "are you announcing the Shaman Writers competition now? The contest doesn't start for another year!"
"Yes," I nod, "and how long do you think it takes to write a book? It took me six years to research and write The Soul of the Land. Granted, that by following the guidelines in We, The Shamans you should progress at a much faster rate, but unless you already are working on a book, I seriously doubt that you will have one ready to enter the competition by this time next year."
The good news is, the contest has had the desired effect. Many individuals who have been thinking that they should write their family histories are doing something about it. Even if they have had little, or no writing experience, they are joining the Shaman Writer's Club and getting to work on the preservation of their families lives and just maybe they will walk away with a prize. Even if they don't, they will have completed a very worthwhile project that will live on forever.
